Your Route to a Full Driving Licence

Follow the links below for useful information to help you on each stage of your journey to a full driving licence.

Step 1 - Apply for a provisional driving licence

You can apply for your provisional driving licence online from 3-months before your 17th birthday. The licence will only become valid on the day you turn seventeen though, but getting it early will allow you to apply for your theory test early and have your first on-road driving lesson on your seventeenth birthday if you want to.

More info and online application at https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence

Step 2 - Study for your Theory Test

Study the Highway Code and the official DSA books to understand the theory behind driving rules, techniques and procedures. If you are taking practical lessons at the same time then your driving experience will help you to understand the theory behind driving, and your knowledge of the theory will help you deal with situations on the road!

Step 3 - Take Practice Theory Tests

Take practice Theory and Hazard Perception Tests to check your learning and make sure you are able to pass it regularly before applying for the real thing!

Step 4 - Book your Theory Test online

Use the simple online booking system to book your test when you are ready. You need a provisional licence to book a theory test. The earliest you can take the theory test is the day of your seventeenth birthday.

Step 5 - Study for your Practical Test

You may have been able to reach this point using self study alone, but now you need some help! You can't teach yourself how to drive and will need to take lessons with an experienced driver, preferably an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). With our driving school (MSM - Mirrors School of Motoring) you can start taking off-road driving lessons on our private road circuit near Farnborough aged fifteen or sixteen (see www.DriveAt15.com) . Or you can take on road driving lessons in Farnborough, Fleet, Aldershot and surrounding areas aged seventeen (see www.Driving-Lessons.net)

As well as taking practical lessons make sure you also study the "Show Me, Tell Me" car safety questions which are included in the practical driving test.

Step 6 - Book your Practical Driving Test online

WHEN YOU ARE READY use the simple online booking system to book your practical driving test. Take advice from your instructor, make sure you can pass a mock test, and only take the driving test when you are fully prepared.

https://www.gov.uk/book-practical-driving-test

Ignore the myths about examiner quotas and everything else. If you are fully prepared for your test and you drive to the required standard then you will pass.

If you want to check the rules surrounding the conduct of the driving test and the sort of criteria the examiner uses to make their decision about your driving then you can check out the following document (DT1 - Standard Operating Procedure guidance for examiners for conducting driving tests)....but be warned, it is a BIG document!
